nerosunero at Nudes, The Kenny Gallery, Galway Arts Festival

The official opening of
NUDE [blatant exhibitionism]
a mixed media group exhibition at The Kenny Gallery
Liosbán Retail Park, Tuam Road, Galway
will take place on Saturday 9th July 2011 at 2.00pm

In association with Galway Arts Festival 2011

Guest Speaker: NUALA NÍ CHONCHÚIR
Nuala Ní Chonchúir’s début novel You (New Island, 2010) was called ‘a heart-warmer’ by The Irish Times
and ‘a gem’ by The Irish Examiner. Her third short story collection Nude was shortlisted for the UK’s Edge
Hill Prize; her third poetry collection The Juno Charm appears from Salmon Poetry in 2011.

The exhibition continues daily, 9.00am to 5.00pm,
Monday to Saturday, through the month of July.

Artwork: ‘Male Nude’ © Mick O’Dea RHA.

***

For centuries the nude has fascinated artists. From the Venus of Willendorf through the statuary of classical Greece and Rome and on to the present we have sought to depict the human body, sometimes idealised, sometimes not so idealised... without clothes! Perhaps the lack of contemporaneous attire makes for a lasting statement - the unadorned human form having an accessible and resonant association for viewers.
The Kenny Gallery has invited a host of contemporary Irish artists to provide their take on the Human Form. For some it is their stock in
trade - but for others it will be something of an artistic stretch, and the exhibition will be all the stronger for their required ingenuity.

Some of the almost 50 visual artists already confirmed to take part include Mick O’Dea RHA, John Behan RHA, Brian Ballard RUA, Katerzyna Gajewska, Mario Sughi, Dean Kelly, Jennifer Cunningham, Brian Ferran RUA, Mike Absalom, Rory Breslin, John Coll, Marja van Kampen, James Hanley RHA, Brian Bourke HRHA & Mia Funk.

Some work will be representational - while others may question themes of 'Nude vs Naked' in art; or indeed the use of the Nude for satirical purposes – as in 'those' Taoiseach paintings by Conor Casby which will feature in this exhibition, giving the audience a chance to see what all the fuss was about!

Expect classical, humorous, sombre, shocking, gentle, powerful and colourful works.

The Kenny Gallery, Liosban Retail Park, Tuam Road, Galway, Ireland.
Free Admission - 9:00-5:00,
Monday to Saturday, July 9 - Aug 4.

nerosunero at The Complex by LE COOL- Dublin (review)

exhibition
nerosunero - Couple
The Complex, Block C, Units 18-21, Smithfield Square, Dublin 7.

Ah, the Italians! Great lovers, accomplished artists, passionate purveyors of all of life's juiciest fruits. It helps to have good hands, I suppose. Mario Sughi (aka nerosunero) has a fine eye and a steady hand and I've liked his vector-illustrations since he did a summer cover for le cool way back in the single digit issues. You know he's Italian by looking at his works. There are girls. Lots of girls. Girls in panties. Girls running on the beach. Half naked girls in laundrettes. It's more abstract than lewd though, and in this exhibition there is subtlety at play. It's a study of those moments couples share and it's the viewer, not the artist, who is the voyeur. Mario may have pedigree through his father Alberto - one of the greatest Italian artists of his generation - but his talent is clearly illustrated on these walls. / Vernon Steel

COUPLE
Mario Sughi aka nerosunero unveils his new series of works at
The Complex Gallery

Opening Reception: 23rd June 2011, 6.00 – 8.00 pm.

Dublin-based Italian artist and illustrator, Mario Sughi aka nerosunero, will exhibit his series of new works in a solo exhibition: Couple at The Complex Gallery. This exhibition will run from Thursday, 23rd June until Thursday 30th June 2011.

Nerosunero's pieces depict characters in scenes of contemporary living. His graphic bold works, rich in narrative detail, unexpectedly convert the viewer to voyeur. Upon first glance the subjects appear in unremarkable routine situations, however upon further inspection, the compositions reveal snapshots of intimate encounters and moments of invaded privacy. These scenes are encapsulated in vivid, arresting colour.

The artist marries delicate linear illustrative technique, with a vibrant saturated pallet; creating an effective juxtaposition. The style and vibrancy of the works helps lure the spectator into the image, encouraging survey and helping to uncover the dark undertones.

Of his work, the artist states: "I would like to think that my work has been inspired by the playful novels of Milan Kundera, and the work of two very imaginative figurative painters: Francis Bacon and David Hockney. But possibly this is not the case, only a playful trick of my imagination."

The multi award winning Mario Sughi aka nerosunero is a member of the Illustrators Guild of Ireland (IGI) and the Associazione Illustratori Italiani (AII). His work, satirical in humour and minimalist in style, has been published and presented in international catalogues, magazines, art websites and galleries.

The Complex Gallery is delighted to welcome nerosunero with COUPLE.

Venice Biennale at Italian Institute of Culture, Dublin

The Italian Pavilion in the World’ – 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale
10 June – 26 August 2011

Opening: Thursday 9th June 2011, 7pm

In the context of the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the Unity of Italy, the Italian Pavilion at the 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale 2011 features this year a significant new development in extending for the first time beyond national boundaries to involve the entire network of Italian Institutes of Culture. Thanks to a joint initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Directorate General for the Promotion of the Country System, and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities on a project of Vittorio Sgarbi, the works of Italian artists active in foreign countries will be exhibited in the 89 Institutes located around the world. Through multimedia installations the 89 exhibitions will come together within the Italian Pavilion at the Arsenal, offering unprecedented visibility to 217 artists as well as to the Italian Institutes of Culture themselves.

The exhibition at the Italian Institute of Culture in Dublin represents Ireland as one of eighty-nine satellite exhibitions featured in The Italian Pavilion in the World at the 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. We are very pleased and proud to be part of this project and to present: Cecilia Bullo, Vittoria Colonna, Elena Gallotta, Paolo Scalera and Mario Sughi aka Nerosunero, the Italian artists active in Ireland selected by the committee chaired by Vittorio Sgarbi.

A video on the Dublin exhibition, on show at the Italian Pavilion in Venice, will offer unprecedented visibility to Ireland and to the artists.

FIRST STOP, more work less waste

"Hello and welcome!
our goal is to provide creatives with an earth-friendly hub where they can find their new favorite photographers and illustrators.
beyond our attractive green color scheme, the artists on first-stop have pledged to significantly reduce the amount of paper promos they send out, or they already send none at all.
The more artists and creatives who join us, the fewer wastebaskets will be filled with unnecessary and wasteful paper promos. and the world will be happier. at least in that regard."

April 5, 2011
Mario Sughi's subjects take a turn for the cool interiors of the gallery space and vastness of museums, where connoisseurs and the curious mingle, mindful of seeing and being seen. Enthusiasm is chilled on ice, as they come to make their deals or simply appear to be dealing with it all in such a world-weary way. Sunglasses, short skirts and suits: the obligatory attire makes those in less stand out for all the wrong reasons. Sughi's sharp, as usual, with work that is both hot and cool.

September 3, 2010
Do not be deceived by the saturated colours in Mario Sughi's latest illustrations, as they are but false promises of envy-provoking days, nights and lives. This playful (or is it cheeky?) portrait of a society that is not without temptation dazzles with its bight lights and sharp lines. The candy colours are a front for A New Sense of Emptiness, also the title of Sughi's upcoming exhibition. Sughi makes us want to buy into this, but lets us know there is no product behind the display.
November 5, 2009

The people in Mario Sughi's vivid illustrations seem to be living a technicolour, minimalist lifestyle. Evocative at times of David Hockney's work, these are images of consuming couples, sporty young people and languid moments. The leisure class is under Sughi's microscope and gets served back up to us in many different flavours. Sughi's style is saucy and leaves an undercurrent of mystery in the seemingly simple narrative under all those layers of colour.
